Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru.

Jawaharlal Nehru (November 14, 1889- May 27, 1964) was India’s first Prime Minister and became one of the key political figures of the Indian Freedom Movement under the able guidance of Mahatma Gandhi.

Here are 4 facts you should know about him:

1. Meet Joe Nehru

What’s up Joe? While studying at Harrow and Trinity College, Cambridge, where his fellow classmates called him Joe Nehru.

2. He has writen two books on history

Want to know about the history of the Indian civilization? Go ahead and read ‘The Discovery of India’ written by none other than Jawaharlal Nehru himself.

Beautifully written by him, it details India’s journey from the Indus Valley Civilization to the British Raj.

The book was written when he was in prison from 1942-1946 post the Quit India movement. However, did you know that he authored another book also? It was called ‘Glimpses of World History’.

3. The Nehru Jacket was a political statement

One of the by-products of the boycott British goods, wear khadi movement was the Nehru Jacket. He had started wearing this after he had vowed not to wear western clothes.

Apart from the stand up collar, the Nehru Jacket is just like the waistcoat. Even after the passing of Chacha Nehru, it remained to be the favorite for many an Indian politician.   

4. He hoisted the Indian National Flag on Independence Day

He was the one who hoisted the Indian National Flag on August 15, 1947 at the Red Fort, Delhi.
